Sierra Leone has become famous for many years of bloody war, in which children were forced to fight. 67% of the population is illiterate. It is considered by the United Nations as the group of poorest countries in Africa. The average per capita income is around $ 1 a day. The country has 6.6 million inhabitants, of whom 43% are under the age of 15 and 11% over 60. There is little to no health care in rural areas. The average age expectancy for women is 43 years and men 39 years. Out of every 1000 infants, 160 die.
Freetown is the capital. Other major cities are Bo and Kenema, Makeni.
